Explore the Lake District

Hi, we’re April and Martin and we moved to the Lake District in December 2021. Our mission is to walk the 214 Wainwright fells here on our doorstep. We’ll also be exploring the nearby lakes and surrounding landscapes. Follow us as we blog, vlog, tweet, and post photos along the way.

We’ve just started this website, so bear with us as we get some content uploaded and make some resources available to you.

Martin and April infront of Coniston water. Both are wearing wooly hats as you can see some snow on the hills in the background.

The Lake District

The Lake District is an area of natural beauty located in the North West of England (Cumbria).

Back in 1951, it was established as a National Park and is well known for its sixteen lakes and the 214 fell tops that the author Alfred Wainwright described in his Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells.

Surprisingly, there is actually only one official lake in the Lake District – Bassenthwaite Lake. Technically, all the others are ‘meres’ or ‘waters’.

A view over Grasmere with a mountain in the background. The mountain is lit up with light whilst the rest of the scene is in shadow. The bright mountain reflects in the water with a fisherman on a boat in the middle of the bright patch from the mountain's reflection.
